Eating is a learned skill.

That out-of-control feeling in front of food is real, but it was never your willpower. Somewhere along the way an autopilot took the driver's seat, and the world around you rewards it at every turn. Mela is where you learn to take the wheel back — properly, and for good, because you finally understand what you're working with.

— What Mela Theory actually is

Every meal you eat is the visible tip of something much larger. Underneath the choice you can see sit six layers you were never shown: the cues around you, the habits you stopped noticing, the feelings food quietly manages, the culture you inherited, the story you tell about yourself, and the chemistry of a body that runs on food the way an engine runs on fuel.

Mela Theory is the method for reading those six layers and then rebuilding them. First you learn to decode — to look at a single everyday choice and trace it down to where it really begins.

Then you redesign — you change the layers underneath, so the healthier choice stops being a daily fight and starts being the thing that happens on its own. Built on behavioural science and food-environment research, not on discipline you have to summon at six o'clock when you're tired.

— How it works in practice

The six layers, from the surface down to the foundation.

Layer 0101/06

Cues

You didn't want the biscuit so much as you saw the tin. Your brain reacts to the sight of food before you've decided anything, so much of what looks like a choice is really a reaction to what's in front of you.

Layer 0202/06

Conditioning

Some choices stopped being choices a long time ago. The sweet thing with the coffee, the glass the moment you sit down — rehearsed so often they no longer ask your permission.

Layer 0303/06

Emotion

Food does real emotional work. It soothes a hard day, keeps the peace at a table you didn't choose, and hands back a little control when the evening has taken yours. Sometimes the reach for a snack is a reach for calm.

Layer 0404/06

Culture

Some of the rules you follow around food you never actually chose. You inherited them — clean your plate, celebration means eating, it's rude to refuse — and they run quietly underneath everything.

Layer 0505/06

Identity

The story you tell about who you are decides what you eat before you do. “I've got no willpower” or “I'm all-or-nothing” isn't a description; it's an instruction the rest of the stack obeys.

Layer 0606/06

Biology

Underneath all of it is a body that isn't broken. It's running ancient software inside an environment designed to exploit it, so poor sleep, blunted hunger signals and energy crashes get blamed on you when they were never your doing.

— The two directions

Decode from the top. Rebuild from the bottom.

You decode from the top, starting with a choice you can see and following it down to its root, so the pattern finally makes sense.

Then you rebuild from the bottom up — steadying the body first, then the story, then the layers above — so the change holds instead of collapsing by week three. You stop white-knuckling. Over the seven weeks, one layer at a time, the right choice quietly becomes the default.

— Why this isn't another diet

A diet gives you rules for the top layer. Mela gives you the whole map.

The diet loop

Rules for the choice, nothing for the five layers underneath. Works for a few weeks and quietly stops. Every diet that failed you took a little of your confidence with it.

The Mela move

You build understanding that stays yours for life. You stop needing the rules at all, because the environment, the story and the biology are quietly on your side.

— The course

Seven weeks. Six layers. One way of seeing you can't unsee.

Over seven weeks, Mela walks you through your own six layers and helps you redesign them, with Ludovica alongside you the whole way. You'll leave able to read any food choice you make, for the rest of your life — and with the skills to change the ones keeping you stuck. It isn't a plan you follow until it ends.

No rules. No shame. Just the first time it all makes sense — and the tools to do something about it.
